Bucharest Plane Monument

Bucharest plane monument, public art, Romania

Public Art : Bucharest Plane Monument

Designer: Unknown

Description: The supposed "landmark for Bucharest" is actually a red and white decommissioned light aircraft from the Romanian Air Force which is anchored to the ground by several concrete blocks. On the side of the plane are the words "Primaria Sectorului 2" meaning Hall District 2.

Date Unveiled: November, 2005.

Location: The plane is located at the junction roads and Fundeni Colentina intersection (section 2), Bucharest, Romania.

Background: The idea to erect the old airplane in Colentina, belongs solely to the then Mayor, Mr. Ontanu. When he discovered the plane was being thrown out by the Air Force he decided to plonk it in the middle of the junction in the hope it would a "landmark for Bucharest".

At Christmas time the plane is decorated with lights which can be seen for miles.

Trivia: The most common word used to describe this is "monstrosity"
