The Garden Palace

This plaque was unveiled on the 16th of September 1979 by
His Excellency the Governor of New South Wales
Sir Roden Cutler V.C., K.C.M.G., C.B.E

To commemorate the centenary of the openinh of
SYDNEY"S FIRST INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION
on the 17th of September 1879

This is the site of the central dome of the Garden Palace
which housed the exhibition.
It was 244 metres long stretching from
the Conservatorium of Music to the State Library;
The dome was 30 metres in diameter and 64 metres high.
The building was destroyed by fire in 1882.
