Public Art : Maori Warrior statue

Sculptor : © Molly Macalister (1920-1979)

Description : A 3m bronze sculpture of a Maori Warrior in a traditional Kaitaka cloak. The Maori warrior stares northward holding a mere (symbol of peace) in his right hand. Under his feet once flowed the Wai Horotiu stream. The warrior faces the docks and wharves of downtown Auckland welcoming visitors who arrive on passenger liners.

Date Unveiled : The statue was commissoned in 1964 and completed three years later in 1967.

Location : The Maori statue is located on Queen Elizabeth Square, Auckland, New Zealand.

Controversy : When the design was first revealed a debate developed over the appearance of the figure. Some politicians wanted the design to be a cliched "tourist" image of a Maori , that is, in a fighting pose and wearing a grass skirt. Instead Macalister chose to present the Maori warrior as a proud majestic figure.
