Public Art in Yokohama

Yokohama meaning “Side Shore” lies on Tokyo Bay and is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture and the second largest city in Japan. Yokohama was once a small sleepy fishing village but in 1853 when Commodore Matthew Perry arrived with a fleet of American warships and demanded that Japan open several ports for commerce the Tokugawa shogunate agreed by signing the Treaty of Peace and Amity. The Port of Yokohama was opened in 1859 and has since boomed into a major commercial hub.
